Bigger tires for my '62 Galaxie...

I'm wanting to put bigger tires on my '62 Galaxie 500XL using my stock 14" rims. I'm guessing the rims are 14" X 6"? I'd like to go with 235 60 14, will these work with no mods?

Re: Bigger tires for my '62 Galaxie...

the tire shop should be able to tell you what the final dimension of any tire and rim combo should be.  I run bigger tires on my 62, I believe I have 8" wide rims, 16 in the front and 17 in the back.  Everything fits really well it's just a little harder to change the back tires.  When I swap them out I jack up the rear from the frame in front of the leaf spring so the suspension is in full droop and I can get the tires out of the wheel well.

Re: Bigger tires for my '62 Galaxie...

Thanks for the info Daze! I decided to go a bit of a different route since I posted my question. I went ahead and bought a set of 15" X 8" steel Wheel Vintiques rims and a set of 235 60 15 Cooper Cobra GT tires. The tires are 26" tall and 9" wide so you're right, they should fit. I was holding off on the 15" rims because I was afraid my Poverty Hubcaps wouldn't fit but Wheel Vintiques assured me they would.

Re: Bigger tires for my '62 Galaxie...

There'll be pics when I get the new shoes on. I picked the wheels up from the powder coater this morning and dropped them and the tires off at the tire shop for mounting and balancing. I get them back monday and will put them on, I can't wait!
I tried to add an as-is pic but I can't figure out how. I think I remember seeing somewhere that I have to make a certain amount of posts before I can include pics since I'm a newb?

Re: Bigger tires for my '62 Galaxie...

Thank you! There's a cool story behind it too. My first car was a '62 Galaxie, not near as nice as this one. Anyway, I'd seen this one running around here occasionally but never saw it at any shows or anyplace I could chat with the owner, none of my gearhead friends knew of it either. One day I'm on FB marketplace and there it is, just listed and his price was near one that we could afford so of course I contact the owner after "the boss" gives me the green light and set up a meeting. The guy is the second owner, his brother bought it new. The brother passes away about 15 years ago and owner's had it ever since. He hasn't driven it in over a year and I believe it because the tags were expired. He tells me he misses his brother and the Galaxie needs to go to another home where it'll be enjoyed. $12,000 later it's in my garage and we drive the hell out of it! I got every receipt since the day it was new, original parts that were taken off, a set of Moon Discs, new carpet and his plates that say 62500XL. The guy is really cool and I've been updating him on the good times we're having with it and the changes I've made to it. I'm only the 3rd owner of this 82,000 mile cherry, it's got some flaws but what driver doesn't?
