1969 Galaxie 500 convertible questions

Hey folks... trying to help out my Uncle who just bought a 69 Galaxie 500 convertible. Car is a nice driver with a 351W. He got it home and found a couple of problems. No dash lights. I am ordering a new headlight switch to see if this takes care of this issue. He also has no high beams. Changed the dimmer switch and no change. Low beams work fine but go out when hitting the dimmer switch resulting in none of the headlights working. I am looking to see if I can find where the headlight relay is on this model. High beams are new known good units. Anyone have any input on this? Would appreciate any guidance as he is in North Carolina and I am in Texas. Thanks for any help.

Dave

Re: 1969 Galaxie 500 convertible questions

There is no relay on the headlights, the power runs through the switch, so it is often recommended to add relays to get maximum brightness out of the headlights. Like most things electrical, you need to spend time with a probe, or meter and trace the power.

Re: 1969 Galaxie 500 convertible questions

Ford was running ground wires out of the headlight connectors at the headlights and grounding to the rad support on earlier models. Not sure if they were still doing that in 69, but would check for rusty connections or broken ground wires in that location. If the ground wires are there, they are about 6 inches long, you should be able to see them easily.

Thanks for the replies guys. Turned out to be the connection point at the firewall for the wiring harness. Cleaned up the connections and now we have high and low beams. Still no dash lights after changing the light switch to a NOS unit. Will dive in further as I get free time. Appreciate it!
