1965 galaxie Heater Plenum

Hey All,

So today I started  rundown of why my defroster is not blowing. After checking all three speeds (which do actually work), and freeing up sticking cables found a couple of issues with the heater plenum. First, the defroster vent does NOT meet the plenum chamber. Second it seems to me that there is an opening on the side where I can see the trap door actuating when I move the defroster control (is this normal? Thirdly, when I open the fresh air vent for the passenger side, I can hear a HUGE amount of airflow related to the blower motor. Finally, fourth, does anyone know where I might be able to find a plenum chamber for this car, the seals that will help me at the very least get air directed to the places that it needs to go, or both?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I need airflow through the vents of this car because as of right now even though the blower is working, I have NO airflow at all.

Re: 1965 galaxie Heater Plenum

A few things to check:
Make sure cables are intact and if adjustments available, make sure the cables open and close the plenum door dampers correctly and completely.
Check to make sure the defroster vents are connected to plenum. Not sure of your car but in many Galaxies, a corrugated flexible tubing was used to connect the two together. I suspect this tubing may have deteriorated, ripped or come off. They are fastened to inlet/outlets by hose lamps.
The plenum doors have foam on them to help seal when closing. This foam may have also dried and deteriorated. I had to replace my foam and was able to purchase a generic type rubber/foam with adhesive tape on one side at an automotive parts store.
I cannot see the need to replace your heater core housing unit/plenum assembly.
It may be wise for you to get your hands on a Ford shop manual to review and understand operation of damper doors/airflow, cable adjustment, etc...

You need to see a parts diagram of the heater assembly, I'd think the manual should show it. On my '59 Ford, I needed a defroster plenum hose, not available. I found a rectangular Jeep duct hose and shortened it to fit.

Re: 1965 galaxie Heater Plenum

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the suggestions. I pulled the heater core and there was no airflow. So I felt back towards the blower and found it was clogged (could actually feel it 6" to the left of the core opening so it was a BIG clog). After chipping away at the clog for about 5 min., it broke loose. The clog was a giant mouse nest so the smell was was lovely. I chipped it away all the way back to the motor and then let it blow for about twenty minutes before buttoning things back up. Made a collar to fit the defrost vents to the plenum box, and voila, airflow and heat.

I did have to free up the register that switched between heat and defrost, but the temp one worked just fine so all is well, and I have a defroster.

Good for you figuring out that one. I always enjoy follow up posts to find out the fixes. Enjoy the heat. Lol

Yeah, when I drove it last week, it was like being in my bud's '72 beetle back in high school in Illinois. If you rode with him you had to carry an ice scraper for your side because the heat would quit working every time you came to a stop. Good times!

A mouse nest... ick... my heater was full of mud dauber nests, looked like clods of dirt, built around wires and everything else. Took a while to shake them all loose. I had the entire heater out of the car. Every hose connection was toast, crumbled away and nobody makes new parts for a '59 Ford.
