Good evening,
I took the wheels off to make myself familiar with the drum brake system and to identify what parts I would like to buy to do the brakes.
Working on the front wheels I expected to have to take the wheel hub off to get access to the brakes as being shown in GROUP 3, page 3-56, Fig. 7 of the 1967 Shop Manual. This pic shows a drum drum being connected to the rear side of the shaft flanges.
Instead the drum sat on the bolts from the outside on my front wheels just as on the rear axle.
Can anybody comment? Usual/Unusual? Common modification through the years?
Thanks
Philip

Looks normal to me.

Its normal but a lit of times the studs are a press fit through the front hub into the drum so in a lot of cases it is easier to remove the hub and drum as one assemble. the rear ones however should easily come off as just the drum.

Alright. Thanks for the responses.
I was probably confused by the pic I found in the shop manual...

Gents,
I need to bring this back up. Had the chance to check the driver side today (pic in the first post shows passenger side).
Passenger side: The drum sat loose against the hub from the outside - no need to remove nut, cotter pin, bearings to take the drum off the shoes. The bolts sit kinda loose in the hub.
Driver side: The drum sits again against the hub from the outside but the bolts sit tight in the drum with a press fit. No way to get the drum off the shoes without taking nut and bearing off.
None of my assemblies show the drum sitting at the back of the hub.
Would new drums today typically press fit or sit loose on the bolts and will they be deep enough to fit again from the outside of the hub and still reach entirely over the shoes?
Who has replaced front drums and can help?
Thanks
Philip

It is probably the studs and not the drum. If the studs have a shoulder that makes the drum a press fit than the two pieces will be held together, if not than the drum will be loose.

Hey Daze,
Good idea.
Looking at the pic from the first post I am under the impression that the studs do have a shoulder.
I did not yet check if the stud holes in the drum were bored but I also can not recall that when taking the drum off the fit appeared odd...
Will investigate further.
Main questions still:
New drums, do I need to press the studs in or will they easily accept the studs even with shoulder and second question, assemble from front or rear of hub?
Thanks
Philip

That picture of the image from the manual is not for the brakes as installed on your 1967. It looks like is is from a long past vintage and is not there to illustrate the brake system construction, but to illustrate the hub and bearing lubrication. The wheel and hub cap illustrated are from much earlier vintage, so don't think that applies to your car.
The wheel studs should go in the hub and the drum slides on, over top, before mounting the wheels. The closer the fit of the drum to the studs the better, but a little tolerance is fine. There is probably no reason to replace the studs if they are not broken.

The shop manual tells me, the car should have 2 1/2" shoes in the front and 2 1/4" shoes in the rear.
Can anybody let me know if those shoes ran typically in the same drums at front and rear or were not only the shoes but also the drums in the rear smaller?
NAPA has different sizes drums for front and rear. On other web pages I usually find drums that are listet as fit for front and rear and they are either 11 x 2 1/2" or 11 x 2 1/4" as if both axels should get the same size ...
Thanks

Different versions; e.g., Police Interceptotors, often have the bigger shoes at the back albeit with different backing plates. If you have 2.25 inch shoes that's the size to replace unless you're willing to find and swap in different plates.
