Since installation of the 2002 4R70W transmission in my 61, I have not had a functioning speedometer. The 2002 uses an electrical signal from the transmission to feed an electronic speedometer. The electronic signal is generated by the Vehicle Speed Sensor(VSS) mounted on the side of the tail shaft housing in the same location as any mechanical speedometer gear drive. As you know the 61 speedometer is a mechanical drive unit. I've been trying to figure out a way to get the speedometer to work.
I came across an interesting article about a Ford 4R70W transmission, explaining the components, etc...When talking about the Vehicle Speed Sensor(VSS), the article goes on to say:
"This is the electronic speedometer drive sensor that takes the place of a cable drive and (phased-out) mechanical speedometer. However, the AODE/4R70W output shaft housing still accommodates a mechanical speedometer drive."
I understand this to mean that it may be possible to replace the electronic speedo drive sensor with a mechanical drive? Anybody know of this? I would be curious to know if any Ford vehicles with this transmission used a mechanical speedometer?[/i]

Went to my trusted tranny shop today. Great news! Turns out many Ford vehicles between the late 80's and mid 90's used a VSS sensor with a mechanical drive component. It has a fitting to accept a speedometer cable and an electronic VSS sensor all in one. It has the same sensor connector as my 2002 and will fit into the4r70w tranny. So what this means is I can use one of those VSS sensors and corresponding speedo cables and feed it into the 61 speedometer. All I have to figure out now is how to get the correct end on the speedo cable to thread onto the 61 speedo. The donor cable I want to use has a snap on type fitting. Keep you posted.

That is great news. Thanks for passing it on.

Got the speedometer conversion figured out and done. I will start a new post on the procedure.
