Re: a couple of hydroboost questions

Just haven't had time to switch out the MC yet. Will post results when I get it done.

Re: a couple of hydroboost questions

I added some Lucas power steering stop leak. Wasn't sure if I should go with the conditioner, but the conditioner bottle suggested to go with the stop leak if the pump was making noise. The Stop Leak also has conditioners in it, so thought it should be ok.
The power steering on the car works fine now. The brake peddle travel is still long and the peddle return continues to be slow. The car stops better but I think the brakes should engage sooner. When driving the car, when I come to a stop, I swear I can still hear the pump making a little groan.
So, for now, I think I will just keep enjoying driving it. This winter I will switch out the M/C and maybe try another p.s. pump. I also have another hydroboost unit on hand I can switch out if need be.

Re: a couple of hydroboost questions

I added a return spring to my pedal because I had the same issue of a "slow return"  that made a big difference.  It is normal for the pump to make a little more noise when you apply the brakes on any hydroboost system.  I think the bigger bore MC will solve your other issues.  That Lucas is good stuff I have put it in cars where the PS system was making tons of noise and the noise stopped as soon as the Lucas was added.

Re: a couple of hydroboost questions

It is very thick oil that is for sure. I emptied the p.s. reservoir and topped it up with the Lucas. Then when I started the car, the pump howled like crazy for a few seconds until the two oils mixed with each other.
Also, great idea about adding a return spring. Just did that today. The peddle returns real fast. Thanks for mentioning that in the post. Don't know why this old brain couldn't figure that one out?

Re: a couple of hydroboost questions

The power steering pump supplying the hydroboost system on my 61 now makes a constant loud groaning noise. Since the hydroboost conversion, the pump always made a faint groaning noise. I wonder if I damaged the pump from improper system bleeding on initial start up as I had some issues initially. Anyway, I have a couple of power steering pumps on hand. My pump is a 2002. I have pumps from a 1998 and 2007. Appearance wise they look identical with a few differences. The 1998 has a variable output valve mounted on the high pressure outlet.  The 2007 when looking inside the high pressure outlet has a spring loaded pin in the center of the orifice. I was hoping to use the pump from the 2007, but not sure what the spring loaded pin is? The profile of the male ends of all three high pressure hoses from these pumps are identical. Does anyone know what that spring loaded pin is?
Picture of pumps, 2007 is on the left.

Re: a couple of hydroboost questions

Follow up on the power steering pump situation. So, I rolled the dice and installed the 2007 pump. Works great. In fact better than the 2002 I replaced. Must have had a week pump from the get go.

Re: a couple of hydroboost questions

I was planning on switching out my master cylinder to address the long brake pedal travel to engage the brakes I wasn't happy with on my 61. I originally installed an early 90's Astrovan hydroboost and matching master cylinder. It was from a disc/drum set up but going with disc/disc I wondered if the MC may not be pushing enough brake fluid. Hence the long brake pedal travel. I confirmed I have a 1.250 inch bore. I hit the salvage to see what I could find and to confirm what might work.
Mid to late 90's GM trucks used a larger bore MC at about 1.5". I discovered that I couldn't use one of those MC's because my hydroboost would not accept the MC as the bore flange is too large to mount inside the hydroboost. My other option was to go with a  late 2000's GM 3500 series large passenger van with disc/disc brakes. It uses a hydroboost system and MC with about a 1.5" bore. Going with one of these systems I would have to change out my entire system and then have to deal with the different size brake line fittings. I wanted to avoid having to do all of that.
So I decided to change out the MC cylinder reservoir as I wondered if the Astrovan rear reservoir might be too small and not have enough fluid available to supply the rear discs.  A MC reservoir from a mid 90's GM truck fit. I also adjusted my brake pedal height as I had some adjustment available from the design of the install. I hope these changes help. It's trial and error for me as I can't seem to get any solid answers from brake shops. I'm told that because I don't have a factory engineered brake system and that my system is pieced together with so many different components, I may not be able to achieve what it is I am after. As a result, there are no definitive answers.
