Stay with original single exhaust or change to dual exhausts?

My 68 XL is 100% stock from the factory, loaded, with the exception of the base 302 Commander engine with 2bbl carb. (It also has the optional limited slip differential).
The Y-pipe, and muffler, are shot and the question is:

1. Should I stay with the original single exhaust from the factory?
2. Change to dual exhausts?
3. Would there be any notable increase in acceleration with dual exhausts?

I know it has it's original Y-pipe, (plus I think) the original tailpipe, and would hate to lose the original look in the tailpipe section.

My muffler shop thinks the tailpipe is not original.  The bends in the pipe have these small ribs on the inside of the bend.  I have never seen this before.
Any advice, suggestions or information?
Thanks!

Re: Stay with original single exhaust or change to dual exhausts?

Are you competing in a concours d'eligance show? Good chance the exhaust has be changed in 48 years if the car was driven most of it's life. Some models of that car had dual exhaust and it is usually considered an upgrade. If points for a factory correct restoration are in your goals, then a single exhaust, with factory type bends, is what you want. If you enjoy driving it and are not after concours trophies, then go dual, if you want. I really doubt dual exhaust would hurt the cars value, but I'm no expert in vehicle appraisal.

Re: Stay with original single exhaust or change to dual exhausts?

If you want a quiet ride stick to a single pipe. You are not likely to notice a big performance increase with duals but it will help. If you want to change the sound of your exhaust, duals with performance mufflers is the way to go. Just remember, the louder the exhaust, the louder it gets inside the car. Been there and done that.
You have many options to consider. Exit pipes can be hidden or exposed with chrome or stainless tips. Side exit or rear exit exhaust. You may also have a budget in mind which may limit your choices.
I would suggest observing what others have done before you choose. Car shows, fun runs are all great places to start. I'm sure owners of those cars would be happy to fire up their engines so you could hear how they sound if they are running with custom exhausts.
