Hello, I am new to this forum, so here's the story, I have just purchased a 1968 XL and am expecting it to be delivered by truck from Spokane in 2 weeks. It is an original owner rust free car, I had one about 42 years ago as my first car and have been looking for one for a bit now. It is a 302 AC pb ps car but its a column shift and I need to convert it to a console shift car. My question is if I find a car with a 390 C6 trans in it, is the shift linkage the same or different? I would need the wiring harness for the console too, i would think that would be the same? We all know that parts are getting harder to find and I am seeing more 390 cars than 302 and I want to restore it just like the one I had.

I expect the neutral safety switch and back-up light switch are in the console on the floor shift car, like my '70, so the wiring harness will have that difference. If I remember correctly, from what I've read elsewhere, the shift linkage at the trans is different between the column and floor shift cars. I've read threads on guys modifying the linkage from a column shift trans to work with a floor shifter, mostly flipping the attachment from top to bottom, or bottom to top, type of thing. If you're going to swap to a different engine family maybe the 385 series could be a better bet than the FE. A 429, or 460 may be easier to come by and less costly to build?
