power steering fluid question

Power steering fluid recommended for 2002 Crown Vic 4.6 is Mercon ATF. My donor rack an pinion from a Cavalier and Astrovan hydroboost needs GM 1052884(which I think is clear fluid not red like ATF).
Would I be OK going with the GM or equivalent power steering oil? I'm worried about damage to the Crown Vic power steering pump?

Re: power steering fluid question

Im no expert. But I would worry about the rack before the pump.

Re: power steering fluid question

I am using the clear fluid (with a little adtitve) on almost the same setup.  My modern Ford pump seams fine with clear fluid and my hydroboost and rack also perform well with it also.  If you are really worried about it get yourself some Lucas power steering stop leak additive and add just a little bit.  (I realize you don't have any leeks but its not about that its about maintaining the seals)  The compounds in it won't heart the rack or hydroboost and should provide the extra lubricant and seal conditioning that the pump needs.
