hello guys i'm doing some research on POR 15. I understand that it cannot take UV rays but can be sanded and painted. I do not have any experience with this stuff. My question is has anybody out there had any problems with it? is it as good as they say it is when it covers rust? I guess I have a hard time believing POR 15 can make rusted metal strong again. I have rust issues under my vinyl top. plans are to patch the bad spots and use POR 15 on the rest of the roof. any thoughts or info would greatly be appreciated. thanks fellas.

I personally have not used this stuff, but a friend of mine has. He has used it on a few restorations and it was used to protect bare metal rather than paint or powder coat. It does adhere to rusty metal as long as the rust is not too extensive. He used it on frames when doing frame off restorations. I know he has also used on suspension and steering components as well. It provides a tough durable finish and he was happy with how well it lasted.

I used POR15 on chassis and engine bay ares when I had my engine out for rebuilding. There were some inner fender areas under the battery tray that had extensive rust and I was pleased how it covered that condition. I did top coat most areas with Duplicolor satin black. I wouldn't leave the POR15 exposed, but if you're going to install new vinyl, then it should be fine without a top coat.

It won't restore rusted metal. It is fantastic for dealing with surface rust and inhibiting rust growth but it will not repair metal that has rusted to the point of no longer being sound.
The best way to describe the use of POR15 is for restoring frames. A frame can handle a lot of rust and quit pitted but still be strong enough. POR15 will fill the pits and inhibit the rust, but with sheetmetal there is usually not enough material there so unless its just surface rust it won't do the job.

thanks guys! I appreciate you taking time to help me out. finding a roof skin that I can use is harder than expected.

how bad is it?? got any pix? since you are going to cover it in vinyl you have other options. once all the rust is removed you could use fiberglass to repair what you have.

The "bad" spots are all along the front and rear windows. About 4 to 5 inches all along the window. Pretty mushy. Never thought about fiberglass. Good idea. Still trying to figure out how to post pictures on this forum....
