Re: Wire kit arrives!

I was planning on mounting the computer components in a console between the front seats. I am thinking now it may be a better idea to mount that stuff behind the back seat near the convertible top pump. There is way more room there and with the Monte Carlo folding rear seat I installed, access after the installation would be easy. Problem with mounting in the front console is if someone wanted to install the original bench seat, the computer components would have to be relocated which would mean a lot of wire splicing?
I am planning on running the wires along the passenger side transmission tunnel between the metal floor pan and the underlayment. What is a good way to protect the wires without using wire loom? I have used wire loom before, but it does create bulk and is hard to hide under a carpet.

Re: Wire kit arrives!

I just re-wired my '59 completely. I also ran the wires down the same side of the tunnel. I just ran the wires through M23053 style shrink tube. It gives adequate abrasion protection and does not add much to the bundle size. Don't use the stuff with the adhesive since it won;t be exposed to the elements. Work in relatively short pieces (2 ft or so) to make it easy to slide over the wires. Shrink the 1st piece, slide the next over with a 1" over lap and you'll be fine.

Re: Wire kit arrives!

Got the entire OEM harness off the engine including the engine bay wires. Man there was a lot of wires. I'm starting to think the wire kit was a good choice rather than to make sense of that rats nest of wire:

ECM's mounted, now time to start running some wires

Re: Wire kit arrives!

Wire kit install done. Pretty straight forward. Instructions were good but did have to call Ron Francis a few times. Next step is to put interior back together, then off to the muffler shop. Was gonna do exhaust in the fall but never got to it.

Re: Wire kit arrives!

Was it a general RF kit or custom for the 4.6 swap? I know it gets complex real quick if you wish to retain the OG electronics/computer.

Re: Wire kit arrives!

The kit itself is pretty much a standard item. They make sure you get the correct connectors for the sensors that are on your engine. The OEM computer stuff is more custom. They "Flash" the computer you provide to remove what you don't want. Things like the PATS security system, ABS, emission stuff, rear O2 sensors. They also calibrate to your axle ratio so that the tranny has the correct shift points. They can set the engine electric fan on temp and set up for aftermarket fuel pumps.
Without that kit, I don't know how you could get that engine to run unless you are a wiring expert. It's a great option for guys like me.

Re: Wire kit arrives!

Good deal then. Mine was a one-size-fits-most generic 14-circuit kit. I'm not using a few circuits so I have room to add things. It went in well, but I took my time. The car isn't running yet, I got the motor back last month. But I did power everything up and I had to de-bug a couple of minor mis-wires.
