I am having trouble decoding the cowl tag / Vin Id. I am using this website below but some information just isn't matching.
Can anyone help me decode? or show me another resource to use?
The Vin number is fairly easy, but 68 does not show up in the resource.
On the cowl number:
I am not sure what the C stands for in the 63C?
What is Trim = 80?
What is D.S.O = 71?
What is Axle = 1?
My tag says trans = 4? I was told the car has a cruisomatic trans, but the code for that is a letter not a number.
Thanks!
Semion

I would get an OEM 64 shop manual (not a Chilton or Haynes). Not only with the first pages allow you to decode the Vin but it gives you step by step instructions on how do most anything that might need to be done on your car.

Thanks Daze. I plan on getting that asap.

There are a bunch of them on eBay both in a digital form and as an original hard copy. I always get a shop manual... heck I have a bunch of shop manuals for vehicles I don't even own

I have some guesses that might help narrow some down. Some of the info I have starts at 65, so it may be the same, but may be different.
63C was a common code for Fastback body style
Axle 1 may be 3.00:1 ratio
Trans 4 is Cruis-o-matic, may be a FX trans
DSO 71 should be Los Angeles District
Let us know what you find out as the correct answers.
