Convertible top juice

I will be replacing the pump seals on my 59 Sunliner.  The common juice was brake fluid or perhaps
type F  transmission fluid.  DOT 3 was the common juice. However it obsorbs moisture.  DOT 4 is a new
improved version of DOT 3. (??)  I'm trying to avoid taking the entire system apart.
QUESTION:  Is it possible to fill the pump with DOT 4 ?? I'm hoping to find Type F.  That would make the job easy.
Please advise.

Re: Convertible top juice

I just replaced my top cylinders and the manufacturer recommends automatic transmission fluid. They indicated the rubber seals in their cylinders are not compatible with brake fluid. My 61 shop manual does specify brake fluid. Due to the corrosive nature of brake fluid I personally would go with tranny fluid every time.

Re: Convertible top juice

The job is complete.  It took almost a full qt. of type F.  I placed a frisbee under the edge of the pump.
I poured the type F into a measuring cup and used a turkey baster to fill the pump 3 times.  The top flys up
or down.  The housing was rusty inside.  A wire brush and paper towels fixed that.
Now I need good instructions on operating the top.  The owners manual is not so good for a 1st time
convertible owner.

Re: Convertible top juice

Thank you.  Would you please re-scan the first 2 pages with them laying real flat on the glass.  It was dificult
to read. Page 3 was fine.
The owners manual for my 59 was real vague.  I figured out the closing of the zipper by un hooking the locks
and raising the top a foot or so.

Re: Convertible top juice

Looks like someone hacked into this thread and changed one of the pictures I posted. I deleted it and am reposting the correct picture. Some people just have way too much time on their hands to be doing stuff like this!

Re: Convertible top juice

My great and wonderful EPSON printer  printed 2 pages from the owners manual on 1 page.
Therefore, the print was agian too tiny to read.   I want to keep it in the glove box with the 59 owners manual.
What a waste of valuable time.
