I used a "new" tool today out in my garage, a scaler
I was cleaning 50 years worth of rust, dirt and oil build up (not to mention a layer of paint that had been sprayed over the top) off of the 9" differential I recently purchased. If you have ever cleaned one of these (with out the benefit of a total tare-down and a parts washer) you know they can be a real pain. The ribs on the case make lots of corners that pack up with oil and dirt and there is no way to get a wire wheel in there to clean them out. A wire brush and a screw driver works OK, but the oil dirt build up after 30-50 years is rock hard and brushing it and chip at it with a screw driver takes a lot of work so you could spend the better part of a day getting it fully stripped and ready for paint. With this air tool I had mine fully stripped in about 30 minutes. I was able to get in to all the nooks and crannies, and it only took me about 15 more minutes with some carb cleaner and a rag to finish the job. This tool is worth its weight in gold.
Any way all this got me thinking, Jay posted a fantastic brake tool, I am posting about a scaler, what other good tools are out there that I don't know about. Feel free to post and share which tools are a must have. Just to clarify I am not talking about wrenches pliers and screw drivers that we all need, I am talking about more advanced tools that make the project go easier.

The scaler looks like a nice tool. Harbor Freight seels them for $70. I see that there are 19 hardened thin steel rods that will do the job as you described. I might need one sometime so it will go on my wish list.
Both of these next items save me time. I think my sandblast pressure pot was a good investment. Plus, I can use it in combo with my small portable sandblast cabinet. BTW, I got both of these used items off of CL.

My scaler came from HF but it is the compact air needle scaler only $30, and still packs a heck of a punch. I too love my sand blast cabinet. Don't use it all the time but when I do man is it sweet to have. I also have an HF vibrating bowl tumbler. I fill it with crushed glass, drop in my rusted parts, close it up, turn it on and walk away. It takes a lot longer to clean a part but the tool does it all on its own allowing me to do other things.

What is the brand and model of the scaler that looks like a great tool to me for another project I have.

I got it from harbor freight. They have a big one and a little one, I got the little one because it was cheaper (30 rather than 70) but the big one is currently on sale for 40 or 50 I think.

Daze,
I just bought a mini needle scaler from harbor freight I just wanted to say "thanks a million". It really does a great job at chipping away old undercoating and road grime and dirt. It gets into corners where grinders and discs can't reach. I got it at regular price less my 20% off coupon. It will save me so much time. Two thumbs up!
