There are two cables running from the dash AC/Heat/Defrost control panel. One long one (attached to the top control lever controlling the temperature) that runs through the fire wall and another cable that's supposed to attach to the vacuum control switch that also serves to redirect air flow to the defroster vents. I'm missing this second defroster cable and can't find a source for them.
Also, I can't find out where it attaches once it goes toward the heater box. On non-AC cars it attaches in plain view near the trans hump.
Anyone have experience with this cable and/or know where to find cables for sale?

I may be able to shed some light on this for you. I had the heater, A/C housing out of my 61 last winter. There were four cables. One cable went to the rear of the unit between the firewall and the unit near the top. That cable controlled the windshield defrost vents. One cable went to front right of the unit, that cable controlled the fresh air door. One cable went to the top right side of the unit, that cable controlled the heater control valve(fancy name for ball valve). The last cable went to the top middle of the unit and that cable went to a vacuum module which controlled two doors that I believe are referred to as recirculating doors, they face the interior of the car.
As far as getting replacement cables, the first place I would start is at a local lawn mower repair shop. Those cable looked exactley like lawn mower throttle cables. If you could find one long enough, with a little modifiction to the ends for the connections, I am sure you could them to work. Some lawn mower shops can make you a cable whatever length you need.

After reviewing my post, I realized I made an error so I want to straighten it out. I stated a cable goes to a vacuum control module to operate the recirculating doors. That is incorrect. The recirculating doors are activated by vacuum only. The forth cable goes to the bottom of the assembly on the drivers side which controls the heat doors which directs air towards your feet. So, when you select "Heat" two cables are activated. One cable closes the defrost vent and the other cable opens the heat vent. When you select "Defrost" one of the cables opens the defrost vents and the other cable closes the heat vent. I apologize for the error and hope to not have created any grief! Regards.
