Information on front sump oil pan swap for Ford 4.6 engine

In a previous post I indicated how I needed to install a front sump oil pan on a 4.6 in order to install that engine in a 61 Galaxie. In another forum, I read how this can be accomplished by using a front sump oil pan and oil pick up tube from a front wheel drive Lincoln with the same motor. According to the thread, it was suppose to be a straight across swap. Remove the rear sump pan and pick up tube and replace witht the front sump pan and pick up tube from the Lincoln. Well, there is more to it than that. The first issue I ran into is that a couple of main bearing cap bolts need to be relocated. You need to get the bolt with the spacer into the correct location for the oil pick up tube mounting tab. The second issue is that the pick up tubes are different diamters and the flanges are different. So, the front sump pick up tube won't bolt to the oil pump housing. The rear sump pick up tube flange needs to be welded to the front sump oil pick up tube. Third issue is the oil dip stick does not work between the two pans. The dipstick needs to be cut and the oil level marks need to be added onto the corrected length dipstick. Lasltly the design of the front sump pan restricts location of the engine. I would have liked to move the engine closer to the firewall, but cannot do so because the rear of the front sump oil pan comes into contact with the front crossmember. Currently the Crown Vic engine mounts lign up almost perfectly with the mounts on the crossmember. Moving the engine back further would mean trimming some of the oil pan and making new engine mounts...no thanks I will leave as is.
Relocation of main bearing bolt. The one with the spacer.

Pick up tubes. Larger diameter tube is from front sump pan

Rear oil pick up tube flange(correct one needed) welded to front sump oil pick up tube

Front sump pan installed

That is some great info thanks for sharing.  What kind of HP are you expecting from that engine??

Re: Information on front sump oil pan swap for Ford 4.6 engine

It is a Police Interceptor from a 2002, I think factory rating is 235 hp, 275 ft/lbs torque? Just slightly more than the 352 put out back in the day. Still really don't know what "Police Package" gets you as far as engine performance. Probablly some timing/fuel management/RPM enhancement? Low miles and got it cheap!

so you haven't done anything to "upgrade" the engine??  I am really interested to see how well it moves all that old Ford iron.  I am pleased with the 302 in my Galaxie, but I also have a manual trans which makes all the difference in the world.

Re: Information on front sump oil pan swap for Ford 4.6 engine

I did speak to a guy who put a DOHC 4.6 in a Galaxie. He ditched the fuel injection and went with an aftermarket intake and carb. He described the performance as sluggish at lower RPM and decent at higher RPM. He wasn't happy with the bottom end performance so he was gonna go back to the factory fuel injection.
I am not expecting much in the way of performance with this swap.(That's for another project)
