suspension

just a question or thought.
IC the CV front and rear suspension are being swapped into Ford f100
all the time, is there that much difference between the car frame and truck?
Has anyone done the CV  conversion to our cars?

PS: I am doing some research on this subject

Re: suspension

what an interesting idea!!!!  With the F100 it is almost a direct bolt in but with our cars I think a little frame surgery would be required.  Get one, try it, and let us know how it goes.    in all seriousness it is worth looking into.  I think the first thing a person would need to do is compare the galaxie frame to the f100 frame.  The second issue might be engine mounts.  with a truck there is more room vertically in the engine bay so you can mount the engine above things like steering linkage, but in a car the parts are much closer together.  Even so I am very interested in this idea, not something I would probably do to my car but something I would love to problem solve and theorize about.  To me thats just as fun as actually turning a wrench.

Re: suspension

Hi Daze
I was on your IRS site yesterday, and see you and few others are doing that type of install
in fact on guy was doing a 61 starliner with a CV frame, what happen to that, thread just
died, hope he did not.
I am researching the frame situation, for the CV subs...
I did a build sheet for a 57 F100 just to see what the basics would cost  around $15 K for
parts, I'm looking at new engine and trans, but I could use the 4r70 out of the wreaking yard
and have it built for $1200  which is about $1800 less then a new built one.
but thats another matter..
Right now my problem is putting the rear end from a 79 Lincoln into my 62 Country Sedan
as the axle is 4" wider, the LC mounting point sits outside the frame rail. My idea is
to use a second set, and modify them by taking a small notch out of the inside of them,
bend them to fit the rail, then weld them. then need to make bracket to mount to the frame.
the upper control arm should be easier, along with the sway bar... but need to get that
LCA in place... using a mustang floor shifter for the 4r70, still need to cut the drive train
hump for that...
I'm about 6 months behind on my 62 build. but that is my money problem...

Re: suspension

suspension
I live in Los Angeles county, and there are tons of wreaking yards around.
one large chain is Pick A Part,
they have a 3 day sale every month, and you can get the front CV suspension for
$92.00  + -
 Rear is about the same,
Also many mustang and TBird cars.... a treasure trove...
From my reading so far, the mustang and TBird rear suspension would fit the
61\62 Galaxie  probably also the fairlanes
I'm not sure about the front suspension on the mustang yet if its a one piece like the
CV or not...
its only time and money.. hahaha
The reason this all came up is that the 79 axle I have is 4" wider then the frame, so
LCA dont have a place to mount, so I'm going to check the mustangs out and see if
the LCA are shorter and maybe will work, of might see about pulling the whole rear end
and see about using it...

Re: suspension

Some how when I read your original post I was only thinking the CV front end.  I didn't even think about the IRS.  If you want IRS I am totally sold on the Jag set up.  It is so easy to use, so easy to modify AND an XJ6 or XJ12 has almost the same width as a 61-64 rear end.  The Galaxie end is 62" flange to flange and the Jag flange to flange is 61.75"  I have one that I was going to put in My 62 Galaxie but it is so far down my priority list that I don't think I will get to it any time n the next 10 years
