Headers for FE engines on convertibles.

I am in the process of gathering info to add headers and new stainless steel exhast to my '66 Mercury S-55 conv. From my understanding the after market long headers will not fit on the pass side because of the coffee can size starter. My Merc has the 428 FE Q-code engine, I also heard of the Tri -Y Header working with a  mini- type starter. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Can you buy a set that almost fits and modify them??  I had a problem where the steering shaft for the rack and pinion I have in my Mustang did not clear one of the header tubes so I cut the tube out and welded in new pieces to go around the shaft.  Then I had them ceramic coated, problem solved. at least for me

Re: Headers for FE engines on convertibles.

Thanks for the input. After much research and hearing from convertible owners that wanted headers, the best choice is the Sanderson shortys modeled after the '60's Tri-Y short headers that are quite rare and really expensive if you can find a set. The Sandersons run about $350. plus if you want ceramic coating to keep them fresh looking. Keep in mind conv. owners you will still need to switch out to a mini high- torque starter to have room for the exhast hookup. There are a few choices available through Summit.  Anyone running dual exhast with Flowmaters or Dynaflows? Looking for a mean sound when you put the hammer down but still be able to hear the radio with the top down. Thanks, Pat.

Re: Headers for FE engines on convertibles.

I just moved and added to a post from the old forum to this forum on exactly this topic of muffler selection,  here is the link.  It will give you an idea of what some people here on the board are running.  I too wanted something mean with out sounding to loud so I started with what the members of the forum were running and went to the web sites of the muffler manufacturers and listened to their recordings of those mufflers and others.  That gave me a much better idea of which muffler was going to have the sound I wanted.  Just make sure you pipe it through good speakers (not built in ones) or you won't get an accurate picture of how the car will actually sound.

What transmission and steering setup are you running?  I'm hoping you'll say C6 and rack & pinion.  Then I'll Have a lot more confidence that the FPA's will fit my '63.

For what it's worth, I have a set of Sanderson shortys that won't work with a C6 and R&P setup. At least not without a bit of massaging (the driver side collector dumps at the rack).
