New Member and I have a question

Hi everyone!
This fall I bought a 1964 Monterey Breezeway that I'm currently freshening up to drive for this summer. Its a very solid almost rust free car (thats amazing for New England lol). It came with a new aqua colored carpet that I would like to dye black. Has anyone had ant experience doing this?
any help would be appreciated!

Re: New Member and I have a question

I have done that before with mixed results.  Some carpets dye better than others.  The first most important part is making sure the carpet is clean.  Then get your self a good quality vinyl dye.  I have used the parts house dyes as well as slightly more expensive vinyl dyes from a Mustang supply catalog and I had better results with the special order stuff.  Once you have the dye the best way to dye it is to drape it over a saw horse, fence or other rounded surface.  This will separate the fibers where the carpet bends over whatever you have draped it over and allow you to spray all the way down into the fiber.  Once you have sprayed a section reposition the carpet so a new section is "opened up" and go again.  Once you think you have good coverage examine it in good sun light from different angles.  This will expose any thin spots where more color needs to be applied.

The biggest problem with vinyl die is it wears through and the blue will begin to show over time.  I did a search on eBay for new carpet for a 64 Monterey and came up with lots of hitsincluding this one for about $150 shipped.  IMHO you would be far better served to purchase a black carpet rather then dye the one you have.

BTW welcome to the forum!!!
