1963 Galaxie 500 XL convertible

Hello everyone

I'm a newbie to this site and have a couple of questions for you.

I just got me hands on a new project and I am decoding the trim tag.

76B X 80 09D 51 5 5
I get...
2dr 500XL conv. 1444 Maroon Met, crush vinyl lt. rose beige, 09 april, denver, 3.50:1, 4 sp man.

All this matches the car..

vin number:
3G69R174....
1963, Chicago, 500XL 2dr conv, 427 dual 4 hi po,

Main question:  the car does not have a 427 in it has possible 352 or 390 4brl
it looks like it has 3/8 fuel line, 11.5 drums, 427 cast exhaust manifolds and 14 inch wheels. 

Do I have a true R code car?????????????????
The owner wants to do a full color change exterior and interior.
How much will this hurt its value?
How hard would it be to find the correct pieces.

one more question I have heard there is less then 10 R code convertibles built IS THIS TRUE..

welcome to the forum!!  So how do you know it is not the fabled 427??  the FE engines all look the same from the outside.  The Vin says its an R code.  Being a true R code car I don't think I would change the color.  I am not one to normally advocate originality, but in this case it will make a difference.  The car would probably take a 3 or 4K hit at least (just guessing) if you change the color.  I can't say as to the quantity of R code virts BUT I can say the 427 was a race ready engine that was not put in vary many cars and the cars they were put in were more "race".  virts aren't typically "race" so I would not be surprised that the numbers were that low.

The motor in the car is a 66-67 428 with 66 390 carb and the 427 exhaust manifolds.

It is a true R code car, correct rear end, trans, steering stops, big brakes, 3/8 fuel line, pass front brake line runs in front of engine under rad. and exhaust manifolds (cast headers), just missing the power plant.

And a rust free body with 92,000 miles.

Will try to hunt one down.
 so if anyone out there has a early 63 427 please contact me.
Also looking for correct 15 x 5.5 wheels

And a side note NASCAR ran a convertible class for a couple years during this time period.

That is a TALL order.  63 was the first year of the 427, and it is a rare engine.  I bet IF you find one, the $$ will be somewhere in the realm of $10K for one that needs rebuilt. If you are not going to go with the code correct color I would not even bother with a year matching 427 IMHO

The 427 was not available until mid-year so there wasn't even a full years production run of the 427's, the early '63 Galaxies were still equipped with 406's. So yes, finding this engine is going to be difficult.
