Good evening,

I did my first brake and wheel bearing job on my 1967 Galaxie on the front and rear axle.

Before I get back on the road, I would like to confirm the following:

Rear Axle:

1) Per Shop Manual: "Brake Backing Plate and Bearing Retainer to Axle" = 50 - 70 ft lbs --> Does this refer to the 1/2" 20 nuts and bolts that fix the backing plate and retainer plate to the axle?
2) Per Shop Manual: "Brake Cylinder to Brake Backing Plate Bolt" = 20 - 50 in lbs --> Does this refer to the two 5/16" 18 hex bolts that fix the brake cylinder to the backing plate? And is it really in lbs?
3) per Shop Manual: "Brake Line Connection to Axle Housing Bolt" = 12 - 18 in lbs --> Where does this refer to?

Front Axle:

1) Per Shop Manual: "Backing Plate and Cylinder Assembly to Spindle" = 80 - 106 ft lbs --> Does this refer to the >1" large hex nut on the top center that fixes the backing plate and wheel cylinder to the spindle?
2) Per Shop Manual: "Backing Plate to Spindle Nut" = 25 - 45 ft lbs --> Does this refer to the 2 hex bolts and nuts that fix the backing plate on the spindle?

If the above for the front axle is corrent, I have it currently inverted.

Thanks for your help.
Philip

Gents,

I am searing a replacement for my wiper water bottle.

The parts carries the part number C7AB-17610-A

Two pics attached. Anybody who can offer me one?

If I cannot find one, I was wondering if I could have it 3D printed somewhere. Anyone with experience on that?

Thanks
Philip

All,

I am planning to replace my fuel and brake lines - from master to drum + from tank to carburator.

I would like to know if anyone has ever done with without taking the entire body of the frame.

Is it possible to just replace the lines on a hoist/jack stands or are they not accessible without taking the body off?

Thanks
Philip

Hi pkevins,

thank you for your answer.

You're right about the different versions of the car and the shoes that come with it.

My question is rather related to the drums sizes.

Would does the drum size (height, not I.D.) also change with the shoe size or can I run 2 1/2" and 2 1/4" shoes in the same drum that is say 11 x 2 1/2"?

Since you've mentioned the backing plates: Any way how I can tell from looking at those plates for what shoes they were made? I have reason to believe that the car has not always received correct replacement parts but rather what was quickly available...

Thanks
Philip

The shop manual tells me, the car should have 2 1/2" shoes in the front and 2 1/4" shoes in the rear.

Can anybody let me know if those shoes ran typically in the same drums at front and rear or were not only the shoes but also the drums in the rear smaller?

NAPA has different sizes drums for front and rear. On other web pages I usually find drums that are listet as fit for front and rear and they are either 11 x 2 1/2" or 11 x 2 1/4" as if both axels should get the same size ...

Thanks
Philip

Hey Daze,

Good idea.

Looking at the pic from the first post I am under the impression that the studs do have a shoulder.

I did not yet check if the stud holes in the drum were bored but I also can not recall that when taking the drum off the fit appeared odd...

Will investigate further.

Main questions still:

New drums, do I need to press the studs in or will they easily accept the studs even with shoulder and second question, assemble from front or rear of hub?

Thanks
Philip

Gents,

I need to bring this back up. Had the chance to check the driver side today (pic in the first post shows passenger side).

Passenger side: The drum sat loose against the hub from the outside - no need to remove nut, cotter pin, bearings to take the drum off the shoes. The bolts sit kinda loose in the hub.

Driver side:  The drum sits again against the hub from the outside but the bolts sit tight in the drum with a press fit. No way to get the drum off the shoes without taking nut and bearing off.

None of my assemblies show the drum sitting at the back of the hub.

Would new drums today typically press fit or sit loose on the bolts and will they be deep enough to fit again from the outside of the hub and still reach entirely over the shoes?

Who has replaced front drums and can help?

Thanks
Philip

Alright. Thanks for the responses.

I was probably confused by the pic I found in the shop manual...
