'71 6 cylinder?

I want to put a 6 cylinder in my '71 galaxie. I'm planning to put a '73 in, but I'm not sure wether I need a front sump, or a rear sump. Near as I can tell ( '71 motors manual ), the sump.is in front, but like I said I'm not sure. I've had this old thing since 1982. It had a 351W in it originally, and has a 400 in it now, but I'd really like a 6. None too sure @ the motor mounts either, so any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks...

Re: '71 6 cylinder?

71 should be a rear steer car, meaning the steering arms from the spindles go from the spindle toward the back of the car.  That would mean that you need a front sump pan as the steering linkage goes under the engine between the sump and the bellhousing.  Just out of curiosity why do you want to go with a 6 cyl?

Re: '71 6 cylinder?

Hi, apart from the fact that I have a 300ci/4.9L in my '83 F250 and both vehicles are getting old (meaning parts scarcities, and increasing prices.), my galaxie is highly modified, and weighs @ 2/3s the original gvw. Hence, the V8s actually develop more HP than usually required. Except when I have a trailer attached, the tendeciy for rear wheel spin is a real issue. The early 6s have the dip stick in front of the motor insulators, the laters behind, so the correct sump ?is critical. Any thoughts/suggestions are welcome, and appreciated...

Re: '71 6 cylinder?

400s in stock trim are Dogs, But they can be made into real streetable power. It would be cheaper to rebuild than to change everything. If you just really like the 6,and have everything, I think mounts should be whatever came w/the 6. Truck maybe?

Re: '71 6 cylinder?

A 240 I6 was available in the car, so maybe stock 6 cylinder engine mounts are what you need.

The original 351W would be much easier to find parts for if you want to change engines for the sake of repairability and easy access to parts. I've never heard of anyone being unhappy with more power, can there ever be too much?
