Re: Other solutions than welding?

Because the plates are pretty thin and it takes time to learn real welding, the linked acetylen/oxy kit was chosen. A welding kit would even has been cheaper, but I have more experience with soldering, so its maybe a chance then that it will be possible to use the car this summer :-) A patch panel was used on the rear side some days ago and it worked ok. Tried to braze the original holes for the screws that fastened the rear window clips by myself today, and it worked great. On monday, some pictures will be taken and shared here

Re: Other solutions than welding?

If you get a wire-feed or MIG welder you'll also need a welding helmet. Some welders come with cheap flip-down helmets but if you can afford it I strongly recommend a good 'auto-darkening' helmet. They make welding so much easier as you don't have to flip your helmet down and momentarily lose sight of what you're doing.

You'll also need a pair of thick leather welding gauntlets, a slag hammer, and an angle grinder to dress your welds. With a $180 wire-feed welder, $60 helmet, $40 angle grinder, $30 gauntlets and a $10 slag hammer you'll be set to handle just about any light welding job for around $320 total + tax & shipping if any.

Used welders and gear can save a lot of money if you can find them. Look for a welder that hasn't been used a lot, they are out there.

Re: Other solutions than welding?

The final sum of money if the welding method had been chosen might had been higher than it became when buying the oxy/acetylen kit.

Here are some pictures. Still not ready to be painted. After grinding down the excessive material, some chemical metal like this  and then etch primer will be used. On the following friday my Galaxie has to be driven 75 miles without rear window to get painted on the roof next week
