Coil springs??

Anyone know by chance
If newer crown Vic coil springs will work in a 64 ??
Especially the police version ones

Re: Coil springs??

the newer crown vic uses a totally different suspension design and it looks like the front shock/spring is more of a strut.  IMHO the better option would be to do as I did and modify your LCAs to accept aftermarket coil overs like I did then you can dial in everything from spring rate to shock stiffness and ride height.

Re: Coil springs??

Daze, did you ever get around to re-locating the shock portion of the coil overs to increase spring rate? If so, how did it work out for you?

Re: Coil springs??

no because I realized it would be a wash.  The closer you can move the shock and spring to vertical the closer you get to the actual spring and shock rate BUT the closer you get to the pivot of the LCA the more leverage the LCA has on the shock and spring, making it less effective in its job of dampening road imperfections and body role.  I was planning to move the bottom mount 1" back so that my coil overs were fully vertical but it moves the lower mount closer to the pivot so I think it would actually make things worse instead of better.  In a perfect world the bottom of the cil over would be mounted out as close to the ball joint as possible AND the coil over would be vertical.  Not going to happen with out building a front suspension from scratch

Re: Coil springs??

Odd that I could never dig up any specs on Ford springs anywhere online. Look up Moog's coil spring PDF file, they list everything by coil size, outer diameter, length, etc. Match yours up to what they list.

Something like an 8000 or 8002 is probably very close to what you need.

Re: Coil springs??

Thanks
That's what I saw
But then saw people running the 02 and older police
Springs and look like there identical in size spec wise

Re: Coil springs??

I think the late model Crown Vic spring thing was more about people looking for junk yard solutions, than anything else. I remember reading discussions on this a few years ago and as I remember it the CV springs were a shorter free height, but had a similar installed height, as well as being similar in overall diameter. This meant they would fit in the car. The factory Service Manual should have all the spring specs and weight to carry for each model and options, engine, AC, etc., and you could use that to find a standard MOOG spring to replace yours with characteristics you want.

Here are some examples of info for the 1970.

Re: Coil springs??

-I guess what I need to figure out is
It's a 64 wagon with a 4.6 dohc and 5 spd with a/c
Would like it to handle a little better then stock if possible
So what would I look for in springs

Re: Coil springs??

When I switched out my 352 and cruise o matic with a 4.6 and 4r70w, I weighed both engines to check weights. Going to the 4.6 with rack and pinion I shaved 220 pounds. I am pretty confident of the accuracy of that figure, I weighed each component individually from both engines and then added them up. Hope this helps you when choosing springs.

Re: Coil springs??

Dan what was the weight of
The 4.6 and tranny ?
My wagon was originally a 289 c4 car
So I can get those weights
