My first '65... Some Newb Questions

got my first 65 ltd.  I just picked this car up yesterday for 1900. I'm not sure if it was a steal or if I overpaid, but either way I'm excited about it.

So my first question is... is there a repair manual that you guys like to use for these things? I can't find a haynes or chilton for this year ford, other than for pickup trucks. Surely there must be something out there? Or perhaps should I just look for a manual on the 390 engine?

Here are my biggest concerns:

You might have noticed from the picture (hoping they show..) that it has a significant lean towards the drivers side. It dosent seem to be leaning just on the front or the back, but rather the entire driver side car. I thought it had been lowered at first until I looked at it from head on. What is the most likely cause for this problem? How can I fix it?

The car brakes...a little too good. I was informed from PO that theres a leak on one of the cylinders. As it is, you barely touch the pedal and you stop. Not slow down... just stop! Pretty sure it still has original drum brakes..never knew they could be so powerful. Whats going on there?

Thirdly, I would like to replace the carb. It stalls when in gear unless your foot is constantly on the gas. Reverse and idle is fine. I'm guessing that it probably just needs adjusted... but Im not opposed to upgrading to say a holly performance carb. IF I upgrade...do I have to change anything else? Will putting a better carb on require changing the exhaust or intake or anything else, or is it as simple as just bolting it on and adjusting the idle screw?

Thank you all for any and all help!!!!!! Really can't wait to make this thing road worthy.

***Ill post pics after I make a couple more posts...apparently that is the rule here to avoid spam.

Re: My first '65... Some Newb Questions

You would be wise to purchase a Ford factory service manual, probably available on line. They are way more detailed and specific to year and model.
With regards to those brakes...are they powered or manual? Sounds like you need new wheel cylinders and kits. If it was my car I would error on the side of caution...new master cylinder, brake cylinders and fluid. When it comes to stopping I wouldn't compromise on safety. With the sudden stopping issue, I would think rusted and sticky wheel cylinders?
With the car leaning to one side, I would be looking for broken or collapsed springs, has someone tried heating or cutting the coils before you purchased it?

I have a 65 galaxie 500, I'm in the process of rebuilding the rear brakes. I got new wheel cylinders, hardware kits, drums, and shoes. It's a pretty easy job and I'd definitely recommend doing it.

Hello Nicko
I read yours and Dan's posts.  Yes get the 65 Ford Full Size shop manual.  Mac,  Dearborn Classics, Melvins Antique Auto Parts , pretty much all the online dealers sell one.  They are around $50 bucks give or take a bit.  Well worth it.
I used to have 65 Galaxie.  Now I have a 66 Galaxie which is very similar.    On the leaning to the drivers side, as Dan said check the springs and also look to see if you have shocks installed on that side.  Maybe someone forgot to install them before you bought it or they are rusted in half.   Also are all the wheels the same size?  Maybe you have 14's on the left and 16' on the right?    I had a Falcon once that had 3 14 inch wheels and 1 13 inch wheel when I bough it.
When doing your rear brakes maybe take some extra time to replace the rubber brake hose and blow down the lines for crud before installing the new wheel cylinders.
Just a few things that come to my mind to consider here.
Good Luck with your project.
Jim

Re: My first '65... Some Newb Questions

I bent some new brake lines on the axle and I'm currently waiting for the flex hose to arrive.

Re: My first '65... Some Newb Questions

My nephew has a 65 fast back.  Parts for 65s are not interchangeable with other years.  Ref. the carb.
Keep the Ford carb.  It may need to be rebuilt.  I bought one on eBay for just under $200.
I hope you keep it stock.  Let the red necks make street rods.  If you need interior work, contact LeBaron Bonney.
Their quality is top notch.  Good Luck
