Re: Need driveshaft advice

The light bulb upstairs just went on! Thanks for the detailed notes. How would you recommend I measure for correct driveshaft length. I'm assume the other driveline place will explain this to me. Doesn't hurt to hear it a couple of times.
And yes you are correct indeed, a convertible, Sunliner.

Re: Need driveshaft advice

bolt your OEM driveline to the rear diff then hold the other end with the slip yoke up in line with the transmission, measure from the shoulder of the slip yoke to the end of the transmission.  subtract 1" for free play and you have the number of inches that need to be added to the driveline.

Re: Need driveshaft advice

better than 1000 words

with the driveline bolted in place like I mentioned in my previous post take the (X") measurement than subtract 1" and tell the driveline shop to make the driveline that much longer (X"-1")

the reason you need that extra 1" of clearance between the slip yoke shoulder and the end of the trans is so the slip yoke doesn't bottom out, in the end of the transmission due to suspension travel, and damage the transmission.

Re: Need driveshaft advice

Wow, this just seems too easy! You just saved me a ton of money and a ton of time chasing for parts I didn't need. Thanks again! Now it's time to get my measurement and off to the "OTHER" driveline shop!

Re: Need driveshaft advice

I brought 4 machining projects to my buddies shop. I got two back and still waiting on the driveshaft and offset bracket for the R&P offset bracket. I know it has been a while now, but when the work is being done as a favor, I have to be patient. Also, it is a very busy machine shop, I'm low on the priority list.

Re: Need driveshaft advice

Got the driveshaft installed today. Here is a recap of how it went down:
I had the donor drive shaft from the 2002 Crown Vic that I got the engine and transmission from. Got the slip yoke and pinion yoke removed from that driveshaft. Got a new piece of 3" O.D. diamater drive shaft tubing(correct length) and had the yokes welded to it. To connect the new drive shaft to the Galaxie, I got a conversion U joint to mate the driveshaft to the diff.
It seems simple now that it is done, but as I mentioned in an earlier post, I got some really bad advice from a drive line shop and also because of my lack of experience was pretty confused. Thanks again Daze for the guidance.
