Some modification was required to get the factory column shifter to work with the 4r70w trans. The factory shifter bracket on the shifter column was hittting the bottom of the hydroboost unit. I cut part of it off and welded an extension piece to the remaining piece on the column. Then I made a simple bracket to mount the shifter cable to the firewall. I used the original shifter cable from the 4r70w. Works good...hope the pointer ligns up with the shift letters when I put the dash back together.

I thought I was done with the column shift linkage to the 4R70W in the 61. I tried to emulate what was on the Crown Vic donor. The shift pattern was opposite. So when I thought I was in park I was actually in 1st gear. What I didn't realize is that the throw on the two cars is opposite. So, to correct that issue I had two options. Get a longer cable and come at the shifter bracket from the rear of the car or to change the small shifter bracket on the side of the tranny from the up position to the down position. I chose the second option. I had to get another tranny shifter bracket from a donor cut it and the existing bracket, weld both half brackets together in order to flip the linkage upside. This was necessary because flipping the original bracket upside down, would have made contact with transmission because it had the wrong angles. Finally I had to extend the cable bracket mounted to the side of the tranny 1.5 inches to line up the cable with the linkage. All good now.

As soon as I read the first post in this thread I wondered if it would be backwards. When I originally got my 62 running I installed an AOD and had the same "backwards" issue. I made an attachable bracket that changed directions, cleared everything and was the correct ratio so that my pointer lined up. I ran it for a while then went to a floor shifter and was much happier with that.

I'm curious about changing the ratio to make the pointer line up. Is this achieved by changing the length of the shifter arm coming off of the tranny? I need more throw for the pointer to line up.

The longer the shifter lever the more cable travel is required to shift gears so the further the shifter on the column will need to move. Lengthening the arm on the column shifter will increase cable travel and reduce movement required by the column shifter. Make sense??

Yes makes sense. Thanks
