351c in 62 Galaxie

Hi, I'm new here, names Dave, I've been on other Ford sites for years, when I had my
77 Ranchero, now a parts car.
Anyway, my topic says it all, I'm installing my Cleveland into my 62. I've seen posts
from a few people who have done this one, and a few who have done the 302 like Daze.
I've got my cleveland sitting in the engine bay, but it seems that the studs don't
reach, meaning that if one stud is in the perch, the other is way out.
Daze I sent you a pvt message, but I guess its best to open this topic to more
people.

The 62 Country sedan is a retro mod,,, Cleveland\C4 (4r) later, 4 wheel discs
except for the 4r, all parts are out of my 77 Ranchero... including upper ball joints.
front springs, Tie rod ends.
Using a powerbooster out of a 2001 Crown Vic, also the MC
since it's smaller...
 Best
Dave

Re: 351c in 62 Galaxie

Welcome to the forum.  I was going to answer the PM but this works better as it may help others.  Here is an old post on the subject that I resurrected from the original forum.

on July 28, 2012, 10:29 am Daze wrote:

A tale of two engine mounts
Back in May I made a post about my 62 getting a heart transplant.  I installed a new 302.   The car is still not on the road because this has turned out to be way more than a simple engine swap.  all because I change the engine mounts.

If you go back even further, back in October I made a post: just got a whole lot easier to put a modern Ford small block in a 61 62 Galaxie

Here is an abridged version of that post:

"what motor mounts do I need to put a 302 or 351 in my 61 or 62 Galaxie. and my answer has always been.

In 63 the 289 became an engine option from the factory which makes swapping a windsor in to a 63 and up cars a piece of cake, however the 63 Motor mounts will not work in a 61 62 car with out modification.  The 63 mounts are the same as the the early Mustang mounts,  they will bolt to the windsor motor but the stud slots in the engine bay on a 61 or 62 k-member are to far apart for a windsor motor.   I installed a 302 in my 62 and used the Mustang mounts and then bolted a 1/2" plate to the top of them and then bolted the plate to the motor.  This allowed me the extra width I needed to make them fit.

This system has served me well for the last 8 years however I never liked the way it looked and I have tried to come up with a better option short of fabricating up my own mounts from scratch.  I had given up until  I was watching Musclecar and they were dropping a 331 stroker in to a foxbody Mustang. To my surprise the engine mounts they used were stud type and a bit wider than the early Mustang/galaxie windsor type mounts.  I did a little research online looking at pictures and found the part numbers for these mounts are: anchor 2725 and 2726

Armed with these numbers I went to my local parts store and picked up a set.  I brought them home, bolted them to the 302 sitting on the stand weighting to go in the old Gal AND bolted up a K-member I had cut from a 61 Galaxie.  To my delight they fit like Ford had designed them to put a windsor in a 62 Galaxie.

Here are some more recent pix of the mounts between the block and the k-member

Hi Daze

Man its taken awhile to get this info correct.
I just ordered a pair from my local autozone.
funny same part number you gave, but for duralast.
this is great, I'll have the engine in, and the brakes in by the end of tomorrow, might
even get the rear axle out of my Ranchero into the wagon..
Thanks again

Re: 351c in 62 Galaxie

A  caveat,  although its a Foxbody Mustang, the engine and year make a difference
these mounts are for a 5.0 engine, which since its a windsor motor, the mounts will fit
a 351c.   there are a few years early 80's that ford did not offer a 5.0... so anyone doing this
type of install, make sure you order the parts for a 5.0 engine. I ordered for a 1993 Mustang
V8.

And again thaks  very much Daze

Re: 351c in 62 Galaxie

So rushed over to Autozone and picked up the motor mounts for a foxbody, cir: 93...
for a 5.0 engine.

Got home, slid under the wagon and installed both mounts, on the correct side
so my engine is up against the firewall, and I'm still off on the perches...
Daze do you think switching the mounts might work.
I"ve been out of this type of fun for a few years, been working mostly on
cars from the 30's back.
Are the 302 and the 351 blocks essencial the same in external dementions
or is the cleveland much wider in the block.
Or maybe I need to go back to the other set of mounts and add that 1/2 or so to the
top?
OPen to any and all Ideas

Re: 351c in 62 Galaxie

It's probably the fact that it is a Cleveland.  When I did my 302 with the early Mustang mounts and the top plates the engine was really close to the firewall, BUT when I went with the Foxbody mounts the engine moved forward 1"  so I am amazed that you do not have tones of clearance between the firewall and the engine.  You could try switching them but I do not think that will work.  I must say this really does seam odd to me.

Re: 351c in 62 Galaxie

Hi daze
 thanks for all your info.
I switched the mounts this afternoon, it did make it a little better, but not  right
So I'll go back to the 64 289 mounts.. I'll start with a 3/4 inch piece of wood to see
how the  fit is, and adjust from there. I know that  this setup was way to narrow, and that
the foxbody mounts were just a tad to wide... so I think if I take the messurements
from the two, and meet in the middle, I should have it..
  I'll post my results.
and give all info I can.
Best
BTW I did notice that the Coyote engine uses a Stud type mount..mmmm

Re: 351c in 62 Galaxie

Daze
When you made the "top plate"  did you off set the motor mounts?
meaning make a plate wide then drill  4 holes, two for the block mount
then two to attache the mount to.

Re: 351c in 62 Galaxie

That's exactly what I did. One plate 4 holes all holes parallel. I used 1/2" thick but if I was doing it again  I think I would use 5/16 or 3/8 plate... Probably 5/16.

Re: 351c in 62 Galaxie

In the end I decided to use the Foxbody mounts. That lead was suppied by Daze
I finally got them to work, see my other post...I'm so confused
Thanks again Daze
