'64 transmission conversion

All,

I have a '64 galaxie 500 convertible that I would like to change from a 4 speed to a 5 speed.  I have worked it over and I need an overdrive to keep it at highway speed without hight RPMs.

Has anyone else done this and what are the complications?  Also, what would be a good trannie to put in?  I heard tremec T5.  But I don't know what the complications are going to be (manual linkage or cable clutch, ect...).

Thanks,
Will

Re: '64 transmission conversion

I have a T5 in my 62.  Fantastic upgrade.  I actuate the clutch hydraulically with various parts from some Mustang kits I sell as part of my regular business.  What engine do you have in the car??  That is the most important bit if info we will need to help you formulate a plan.

Re: '64 transmission conversion

Mine is a '64 ford galaxie convertible: 390 with 3 x 2 carbs, Edelbrock heads, direct port nitrous, MSD ignition, aluminum radiator and aftermarket headers feeding into the T-10 and 9" rear.  The headers are a consideration as they limit linkage placement.  The X-frame underneath is a minor consideration since it impacts the space for the cutouts and exhaust.  I have heard the T-5 mentioned by another person.

Re: '64 transmission conversion

Unless you drop a big wad of $$$ for a hardened gear T5, a T5 won't be strong enough.  In my case I am running a 302 so I can get away with it, but an engine like that is going to need a TKO/3550 type trans.  A hydraulic clutch is the easiest way to get around headers, but clearing the exhaust is going to be an issue.  Both the T5 and the TKO transmissions are bigger vertically than your T10.  that means the trans crossmember will need to be lowered and the exhaust will probably need to be reworked around the crossmember.

Re: '64 transmission conversion

Maybe a Gear Vendors over drive unit might be the answer?
