I have a 1961 galaxie with the original 292. Im thinking of transplanting the drive train from a 89 mustang, 302 automatic. Have any of you done this and how did it work out. Any problems, headaches??

Not a 302, but a 4.6 with 4R70W. You will need to use a front sump oil pan, and deal with transmission mount and drive shaft. You will need to modify the Mustang speedometer cable to work with your 61 speedo and deal with tranny linkages. The 302 is a great engine. With a little "tweaking" they sound great and produce good power.
Check out Daze post's on this site. He put a 302 in a 62. He figured out what engine mounts to use to basically bolt the 302 in. We fabricated different tranny mounts in our cars so check out our posts. Good luck.

TCI automotive has a good page that gives you every outer dimensional difference between the aod and both Ford three speed autos.
Are you planning on keeping the fuel injection, or going carbbed? The 5.0 still is a low deck Windsor, but you're going to need an electric fuel pump and run a return if you stay with the factory MPFI. Mounting the five-0 won't be any harder than a 289.
Make sure to get your engine harness if you stay with the factory fuel/ignition setup. Also check to see if the ignition module is distributor, or remote mount. If remote it should be mounted upfront of the radiator.
Just my two cents, but I would go with a carb style intake and either go with a carb or one of the fuel injection setups that mounts on any square bore intake. Little more simple as far as wiring/harness goes, and will allow more freedom as far as mods go. Although the mass air setup will allow cam and other upgrades like exhaust, etc.
