69 LTD Drum brakes (FRONT)...

SERIOUSLY need some help here!!! While replacing all the brake hardware on the 69 LTD (front drum brakes/3") one of the return springs broke. Absolutely NO luck finding a replacement anywhere! Any advice would be a great help! Are there other springs that will work, say... from f-series trucks? ...other models/makes? I'm looking for that double spring that holds the top of the shoes together and lies next to the wheel cylinder. Thanks!!!!

Re: 69 LTD Drum brakes (FRONT)...

Not sure what you mean by (double spring) but Rock Auto, and  Amazon both have front drum spring kits for a 69 LTD with 3" brakes.

Yes;  here's a specific SKU, same for all engine configurations in a '68 LTD:

Re: 69 LTD Drum brakes (FRONT)...

Communicating via forums are new to me, so please be patient.  ...Amplifying info on the "double spring". Most front drum brakes have a stud above the wheel cyl that the spring is hooked to and the other end to the shoe. In my case, there is no stud. The (top of the) shoes are hooked to each other underneath the wheel cyl. Just doing an internet search of "drum brake return spring" shows a few that have a coil and hook on BOTH ends. That's what I have. Everything I find though are too long. Mine are about 7.5" end to end. The only ones I've found are either too long or way too short. If I knew how to attach a picture here, I would. I'm also wondering if a different style of spring was used but served the same function? The car is truly original (family member owned) with only 53k miles on it and could very well be the ORIGINAL brakes...  As for spring kits on Amazon, Rock auto, none have that specific spring. If anyone has part #s (kits) that would help as well.

Re: 69 LTD Drum brakes (FRONT)...

Hmmm, how are you certain they're original?  Has all of the service work on it the last 49 years has been under your watch?  I don't know about 69 Factory service manuals but in my Factory OEM 62/63/63 fullsized Ford  '66 (Mustang) manuals there are diagrams of the brake assemblies.  Do the equivalent drawings match what you have?
This link probably won't help but if none of those match what you have in hand, then based on what you've said (and with all respect) it's hard to believe you have the original assemblies.

If you want to guess it's a truck assembly maybe this?

Besides the factory service manual set (NOT Haynes, NOT Chilton) you may need to find a 65-72 Ford Parts Catalog and start searching via the actual part numbers that shipped on '69 LTDs; e.g., https://www.amazon.com/1965-Master-Parts-Accessories-Catalog/dp/1603711007

Re: 69 LTD Drum brakes (FRONT)...

Ok, so now "I" feel like an idiot! I stopped by the shop where the car is (still) sitting on a lift awaiting this spring and looked at it again. Yes, the stud above the wheel cyl IS there! Yes, the top of the shoes have a spring that hooks from the shoes to the stud. But... the spring I still need, hooks to both shoes and sits below the wheel cyl. On rear (drum) brakes there's a steel "fork" that resides in the same location and is part of the parking brake portion. If you're willing to provide me with an email address, I can send you a picture of it. My email is jckpost@aol.com. I can reply to you with the picture. I'm hoping that MAYBE someone out there has a spare they will sell to me until I can get new ones. Thanks for all the help!

Re: 69 LTD Drum brakes (FRONT)...

PM sent.
It looks like you're trying to find a spring that is NOT in the kits (my bad); the part number for your ride would be C2OZ-2035-D

A lot of vintage car owners over the years have converted their front drums to discs; maybe they've kept the old parts.  Sorry I did not do that when I converted my Mustang to disks years ago.

Re: 69 LTD Drum brakes (FRONT)...

Sample of a craigslist ad for some likely-to-be-discarded front brake assemblies per my suggestion above that you may need to scrounge for the part.  I found it by searching Craigslist for "Ford Drum Brakes". in the Auto Parts section.
https://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/pts/d/wts-5-lug-front-drum-brake/6639657538.html

I've sure learned that when I next service the brakes on my old Ford, I need to take special care in removing the old parts...

Re: 69 LTD Drum brakes (FRONT)...

Here's a link with a complete spring kit from Autozone (danger zone). https://www.autozone.com/brakes-and-traction-control/brake-drum-all-in-one-kit-front/duralast-brake-drum-all-in-one-kit-front/704809_553041_0

What I have found in most cases is that the hardware kits are pretty much the same whether you get them from a restoration warehouse or from your local parts store. You might also try Dearborn Classic website, as well as Auto Krafters website.

Hope this helps.

Re: 69 LTD Drum brakes (FRONT)...

I can send a PDF of a page from a Ford Manual that shows the drum brake parts for 65 - 72 Ford and Thunderbird. Can't post it here anymore, so I'll try the e-mail in the previous post.
