Did a quick search. To run a tach, I would need to install a tach driver module which runs about $100, then I would have to buy a tach. The module picks up signals from a couple of coils and then sends a signal to the tach. 
Personally, the cost involved just isn't worth my consideration.

It looks like this guy did it without using a tach adapter, he went to the PCM to get te tach signal. This way instead of the diagnostic port I mentioned earlier.
