You can remove the accumulation of natural rust preventative (grease and oil and dirt) by buying some oven cleaner.
Any brand will do, but be careful not to get the cleaner on any painted surfaces that you want to preserve. Just spray it on and wait about 10 minutes and wash off with water. A second or third application may be necessary.
